Central Borneo Rainforest Project
Location: Central Kalimantan
Area: 216.000 Ha
Regencies: Located in three districts; Katingan, Seruyan, and East Kotawaringin
Target Villages : Surrounding villages close to our office; Tumbang Payang, Tumbang Kania, Tumbang Getas, Pantap/Tangar, Rantau Pulut, Rantau Panjang, Tumbang Bai, Pangke, Rantau Panjang, Penyompa, and Tewai Hara to list a few.
Economy:
- Economic development and increase in community income through Agroforestry program (by developing rubber plantation, as well as various fruits and vegetables plantation for the community).
- Improvement in marketing facilities for non-timber forest products.
- Development of educational infrastructure, provision of scholarships, and medical services.
Certification that have been obtained include:
- PHPL-VLK performance certification from Ministry of Environment and Forestry by PT TUV Rheinland certification institute.
- Forest Management and Chain of Custody certification from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) by Rainforest Alliance certification institute then later audited by SCS Global Service.
- Reduce Impact Logging (RIL) certification, using standards from Tropical Forest Foundation (TFF) that we have applied since 2010, by PT TUV Rheinland certification institute.
Central Kalimantan General Information
Central Kalimantan is one of the five provinces in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Its provincial capital is Palangkaraya. Central Kalimantan spanned across 157.983 km2. According to 2010 population census, this province has 2.202.599 people, with 1.147.878 men and 1.054.721 women. On a more recent census in 2015, the population has grown to 2.680.680 people. Central Kalimantan has 13 regencies (kabupaten) and 1 city (kotamadya).
Natural Surroundings
Muller Swachner highlands and hills stand on the north part of Central Kalimantan, whilst lowlands and bayous dominate the south region. Adjacent with three provinces, which are East, South, and West Kalimantan and Java Sea as well. Central Kalimantan has humid tropical climate due to its location, crossed by the equator.
Biodiversity
There are still many unknown and unexplored coastal area, mountains/hills, lowlands, bayous, and all kinds of tropical vegetation. Orangutan is a endemic animal species that are still around in many areas of Central Kalimantan, especially in Tanjung Puting National Park which spanned across 300.000 ha in East Kotawaringin and Seruyan regencies. Besides orangutan, there are an array of monkey species, bears, porcupines, pangolins, crocodiles, lemurs, freshwater whales (tampahas), and a diverse range of animals in Central Kalimantan.
Natural Resources
Forests dominate 80% of Central Kalimantan area. Primary forests took around 25% of the area. In 2007, oil palm plantations start to dominate an extensive 700.000 ha area. Rubber and rattan plantations are spread throughout the region, particularly in Kapuas, Katingan, Pulang Pisau, Gunung Mas, and East Kotawaringin regencies.
There are still many natural resources potentials, including those that have been cultivated are coal, gold, zircon, and iron mining. Potentials for copper, kaolin, and gemstones are also there, yet to be explored.
